Coverage varies by plan

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for avascular necrosis

Avascular necrosis (also called osteonecrosis) happens when bone loses its blood supply and begins to collapse, most often in the hip. In early stages, hyperbaric oxygen may help reduce swelling in the bone and support new blood vessel growth.

Am I a candidate?

Hyperbaric oxygen is evaluated case by case for avascular necrosis. It is most often considered when:

  • You have been diagnosed with avascular necrosis on MRI or other imaging.
  • The disease is at an early stage, before the bone has collapsed.
  • Your orthopedic surgeon agrees hyperbaric oxygen is worth considering as part of your plan.

Coverage for avascular necrosis depends on your insurance plan. We verify your benefits before you start and tell you in writing what to expect.

The evidence

Avascular necrosis is included in the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society’s list of indications. It is not part of Medicare’s national coverage determination, so coverage depends on your plan.

Questions patients ask about avascular necrosis

Will my insurance cover it?

It depends on your plan. We check your benefits before you start. If it is not covered, we will tell you the self-pay cost in writing first.

Can it help if my hip has already collapsed?

Hyperbaric oxygen is most often considered in earlier stages. Your provider and orthopedic surgeon will discuss whether it makes sense in your case.
