Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for necrotizing soft tissue infections

Necrotizing soft tissue infections, including necrotizing fasciitis, destroy tissue quickly and are treated first with emergency surgery and antibiotics in the hospital. Hyperbaric oxygen can be added to that care to help limit tissue damage, support infection control and help the wound heal afterward.

Am I a candidate?

Hyperbaric oxygen is used as an adjunct for necrotizing soft tissue infections in the following situations. Our team confirms candidacy during your evaluation.

  • You have been diagnosed with a necrotizing soft tissue infection.
  • You are being treated, or have been treated, with surgical debridement and antibiotics.
  • Your surgical team has recommended or agreed to adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen.

A suspected necrotizing infection is an emergency. Go to the nearest emergency department or call 911. HealOx is not an emergency facility.

What treatment involves

90 minat pressure, ~2 hours total

Resting in a clear chamber, breathing 100% oxygen; plan on about two hours per visit.

5 daysper week

Consecutive weekdays at the location closest to you.

Variesby case

Your provider sets the number of sessions with your surgical team.

Hyperbaric oxygen is always an adjunct to surgery and antibiotics, never a replacement. We coordinate with your surgeon and infectious disease physician throughout.

The evidence

Necrotizing soft tissue infection is an approved indication of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society as an adjunct to surgical and antibiotic treatment.

Questions patients ask about necrotizing soft tissue infections

Can I come to HealOx instead of the hospital?

No. Necrotizing infections need emergency surgery and hospital care first. HealOx provides outpatient hyperbaric oxygen as an add-on to that care when your surgical team recommends it.

Will my surgeon stay involved?

Yes. We work alongside your surgeon and send progress notes throughout treatment.

What will it cost me?

For covered indications, your cost is your plan's usual copay or coinsurance. We verify benefits and obtain prior authorization before you start, and tell you in writing what to expect.
